Taiwan, China's Telecom Operators to Build First Undersea Cable

Taiwan's telecom operators Chunghwa Telecom, Taiwan Mobile, and Far Eastone and China's telecom operator China Unicom signed an MOU (Memorandum of Understanding) on January 13, 2011 to build the first undersea cable directly connecting Taiwan and China, according the Taipei Times of Taiwan. It is reported that the 220km undersea cable will link Taiwan's Tamsui with China's Fuzhou city. It is expected that the major telecom operators cross the Taiwan Strait are planning to build a second undersea cable in the future. Construction of the new cable line is slated for completion by the end of 2011.
